U.S. Star Wars Episode VII Auditions! Gary Kurtz Thinks It is Great!

Hey kids, wanna be in a Star Wars movie? There is a U.S. casting call now for the roles we learned of yesterday. What is interesting is that these roles can’t be Han and Leia’s biological children. Their children would be white. I am so glad they are thinking outside the box and not only looking at young white actors for these new roles. Representation in Star Wars is somewhat lacking (mostly because it is a product of its time). Now, the chances the actors will be white is probably still pretty great, since a lot of the worldwide search is in Europe. I still like that they are looking for the right people for the parts and not just a predetermined ethnicity which defaults to white.

Luke Skywalker’s wife could be any race, so these could still be Skywalker children. I’m thinking these two characters are not directly related to the Skywalkers or the Solos at this point. Mara Jade is pretty famous for her red hair, so if they go that route, it would be fun, but probably controversial. I haven’t felt like Mara has been removed from the general lore, with t-shirts and action figures still hitting consistently at this point.

I love the fact they are looking for the best kids and they’re looking everywhere. That is fantastic news.

Here is the casting call:

In other news, Gary Kurtz wrote a blog for the Guardian that praises the process and relates it to Kurtz and Lucas’ process back in the mid-seventies:

Doing open auditions makes sense to me. Some of the more recent films they cast star names. I think they never bothered to test them with other people and sometimes when you do that there doesn’t seem to be a lot of chemistry on the screen.

They are not going to be shooting it until next spring so they have got time to search through all these candidates. They don’t have a script as far as I know, but they will have a good idea where they are going with the story.

I think JJ Abrams is a really good choice to direct the new film. From what I can see he loves the Star Wars mythology and the early films. He’s a fine film-maker and knows how to present stories. The fact that they are doing a new trilogy and a series of separate origins movies as well means they have an opportunity to do quite a few different things. It might be overkill, but having all these characters doesn’t seem to be a problem for the Marvel films. And Disney seems to have made a real success of those.
