Speculative Analysis of Star Wars: Episode VII’s Young Cast Members

By  |

Incorrect information coupled with two of the new cast members filming in Abu Dhabi lead us down the wrong path. Earlier rumors that Micheal Arndt’s draft featured new characters but J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan scaled back on the new characters made many speculators assume we were just seeing two new leads after we saw the table-read. We also had Bob Iger (chief executive officer of Disney) saying the new film “will follow a trio of young characters” and we assumed that would be Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Domhnall Gleeson based on the table-read. But everything we thought we might know was put into question yesterday when Crystal Clarke and Pip Andersen were announced as cast in the film.

“Late-teen female, independent, good sense of humour, fit.”

Since this was the first casting listed, lets assume this is Daisy Ridley.

“A second young female, also late teens, tough, smart and fit.”

With Crystal Clarke being cast second, lets assume this is her.

“Young twenty-something male, witty and smart, fit but not traditionally good looking.”

John Boyega is 22 year old, he fits this role. Traditionally good looking is subjective.

“A late twentysomething male, fit, handsome and confident.”

Pip Andersen is 23 years old, but could look a little older, appears fit, handsome and confident. Still, he may not be this part. Perhaps his parkour skills made him rise to the top of Lucasfilm’s list because he excelled in 3 out of the 4 prerequisites. This could be Domhnall Gleeson’s part though.

There is still a chance Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Domhnall Gleeson are the main trio in the film and Crystal Clarke and Pip Andersen are emerging characters with more significant roles in Star Wars: Episode VIII. It has been suggested that Rian Johnson (still yet to be announced as director and writer of Star Wars: Episode VIII) had a hand in choosing Clarke and Andersen because he will be the director working with them in Star Wars: Episode VIII while J.J. Abrams will introduce them in Star Wars: Episode VII.

One thing is for sure, they did not look at 30,000 casting prospects to find Clarke and Andersen to fit the roles of the next Ric Olié and Sabé.  These roles have to be substantial. I would still bet on Boyega and Ridley as filling in the “trio” because of the location filming they’ve already done. So who finishes the trio? Gleeson, most likely since he was apparently cast with some urgency to make the table-read.

If Star Wars: Episode VII has done anything, it has captured our wonderment. Until we get more details, these things remain in flux.
