Details on Star Wars Coming to Disney Infinity 3.0

No doubt in honor of Revenge of the 5th, Disney released details on Star Wars coming to Disney Infinity 3.0. A few days ago, our own Jesse Tschopp reported on the first look we got regarding the Star Wars Disney Infinity 3.o starter pack.  That set features Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano from The Clone Wars.  We all knew that those two figures would be the tip of the iceberg and many anticipated seeing other well known Star Wars characters in the Infinity design.

Today Disney and Star Wars officially released details on the upcoming line. According to the release:

  • The Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition Starter Pack will be available this fall at a suggested retail price of $64.99, and Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition will be loaded with content that brings together some of the most beloved universes in pop culture:
  • Three Star Wars Play Sets, one set in the timeline of Episodes I-III, the second set during the original trilogy, Episodes IV-VI, and the third available this winter based on Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Presumably this Starter Pack is the Anakin/Ahsoka set we first saw.  That set will be followed by PT, OT, and ST sets in the winter.

Each of the Star Wars Play Sets offers distinct experiences, with varied gameplay, environments, and characters. The Star Wars: Twilight of the Republic Play Set takes place during the height of the Jedi’s powers, where players will use the Force and lightsabers in epic battles and master their combat skills alongside Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, and Darth Maul. The Star Wars: Rise Against the Empire Play Set will take players on galaxy-spanning missions with Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia Organa, Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Darth Vader, piloting X-wing fighters or the Millennium Falcon to fight stormtroopers, or exploring and partaking in land-based missions on planets like Tatooine, Hoth, and Endor. Additionally, fans will have the unique opportunity to play with all of the Star Wars characters in all of the Star Wars Play Sets.

The Clone Wars characters will be included as part of the PT sets.  That makes sense to me as The Clone Wars, though distinct, firmly took place in the PT era.  In fact, based on the Game Informer video (below), it seems that the genesis of this project started with The Clone Wars characters.  In contrast, there’s no mention yet of Rebels playsets.  I love the idea that all the characters–PT, OT, and ST–will be playable together.  Anakin Skywalker vs. Darth Vader?  Clone Troopers vs. Stormtroopers?  You can play that out on Disney Infinity!

The upcoming issue of Game Informer contains more details on the Star Wars Infinity sets:

Star Wars fandom is often divided between the two trilogies, and Disney Infinity 3.0 is catering to both audiences. Avalanche returns at the head of development while recruiting other studios to work on specific packs and systems. Ninja Theory’s (Devil May Cry, Heavenly Sword) pack-in playset, Twilight of the Republic, follows Anakin and Ahsoka as they fight to uncover who’s behind a freshly minted droid army. The story is set after Star Wars: Episode II, and it features land and space battles with plenty of melee combat. Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Darth Maul can enter the fray, too, as separately sold figures. Studio Gobo’s (Disney Infinity’s Pirates of the Caribbean playset) Rise Against the Empire is a highlight reel of sorts that follows the events of the classic trilogy. Luke and Leia tangle with Darth Vader and his forces through memorable sequences, including the battle of Yavin as well as time on Hoth and Tatooine. Chewbacca, Han Solo, and Darth Vader figures will be available individually. Star Wars characters can cross over between the Star Wars playsets, too, which could lead to some canonically unsound (but fun) scenarios.

Sounds like a really fun way to play in the sandbox of our favorite galaxy far, far away.  I don’t play video games, but I absolutely love this animated style.  I know quite a few fans who have been collecting the Infinity figures just for display. I’ve stayed away to this point but I’m all in now.

Game Informer has actually set up a Star Wars Infinity hub to cover all the information.  According to that site, we will get additional information tomorrow!

On a personal note, looking at those images of Han, Luke, Leia and Chewie… I can’t help but think how awesome an OT animated show would be.
