Star Wars: Rogue One experimented with the Oculus Rift headset to pre-visualize the film.

A new video Inside Industrial Light & Magic gives a great look at the Xlab project showing us virtual reality mixed with a lot of Star Wars content. One particularly cool moment features Rogue One director Gareth Edwards experimenting with some pre-visual directing on an Oculus Rift headset.

At about 3:44 of the video Edwards explores a rough set that is not finished. The story goes that Edwards said “this is way better in real life.” Of course by “real life” he means with the headset. At that moment the developers knew they were really on track with where they were taking the technology.

It is interesting to think that Edwards might have used VR technology to work out some of Rogue One’s direction.
