The identity of Max von Sydow’s character has been a slippery piece of information to obtain over the last year. The moment we saw the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII on that momentous day in 2014, fans wondered who Max von Sydow could be playing. Over the course of the year it was revealed he was playing a character codenamed “The Vicar.” For all intents and purposes the code name worked for the minor role Sydow has in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. But still there was a nagging pull to discover the character’s name in the film.
The rumor going around is that Max von Sydow plays a character named Lor San Tekka, a man in possession of information vital to the quest of finding the elusive Luke Skywalker. As an elder of a village on Jakku, Lor San Tekka is sought out by the heroic pilot Poe Dameron to find the missing Jedi’s whereabouts.
Most of the information hitting for The Force Awakens is low hanging fruit at this point. But this is one piece of information I have chased for the better part of a year now. With that said, the movie is just around the corner and the deeper mysteries will be revealed on screen and I have no plans to reveal anything more about the character. With our focus on the next Star Wars productions being undertaken at present, this is perhaps the last mystery (if accurate) that I cared to truly know and share from The Force Awakens.
If you have followed the rumors for the last year, you no doubt know what happens to Lor San Tekka in the film so I won’t bore you with those details again. If this information pans out and the rumor is correct, we will now know all the actors and their characters from the original casting announcement from April of 2014 and the final character without a name has been revealed.
Note: Contrary to popular belief, “The Vicar’s” real name is not Fax von Sydow in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Just the fax.
