MakingStarWars.net correspondent Eric Cameron checked out all the new offerings from Hasbro at New York Toy Fair. Here is his report!
In recent years, many fans have been very underwhelmed by Hasbro’s announcements for Star Wars action figures at the New York Toy Fair. The excitement and hype is always high for New York Toy Fair, especially this year as it is the 40th Anniversary of A New Hope. One would expect this to be one of the best Toy Fairs for Star Wars fans; thankfully, that is the case. Hasbro completely delivered this year with all sorts of new news, photos, and announcements regarding all of their merchandise to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of Star Wars!
The Return of the Vintage Collection:
Many fans have been begging Hasbro to bring back the Vintage Collection ever since it was canceled in 2012 (damn, time flies). Well now, fans’ prayers have been answered… sort of. The Vintage Collection is coming back, this time in 6” scale (still called The Black Series, but it’s basically just an upscale of the Vintage Collection) as opposed to its predecessor in 3.75” scale. What’s unique about this line of figures is that the whole line is completely modeled after the original 12-back figures from the first line of Star Wars figures from 1978. They even recreated the Early Bird Special Kit from Christmas 1977 in 6” scale. Here are all the details!
The Early Bird Special Kit Reproduction (Legacy Pack) consists of a classic remake of the action figure stand and backdrop to display all of your Black Series figures. It also comes with the newly-designed 6” Darth Vader figure. This set is set to release in April 2017, around the time of Star Wars Celebration, at a $39.99 price tag.
The rest of the 6” scale VIntage Collection (Black Series) figures will retail at $19.99, and we be released in two separate waves:
Wave 1 (April 2017)
- Han Solo
- Princess Leia
- Ben Kenobi
- Luke Skywalker
- Luke Skwalker X-Wing Pilot (Star Wars Celebration Orlando Exclusive)
- Darth Vader (same figure as in the Early Bird Special Kit, just single carded)
Wave 2 (June 2017)
- Death Star Commander
- Tuskan Raider (Sand Person).

My guess is that the retro-style packaging will be the regular packaging for all 6” Star Wars figures from now on. It would be amazing if Hasbro made The Last Jedi figures on a Vintage Cardback!
In addition to the return of the Vintage Collection, Hasbro also unveiled new retailer exclusives that will be available later this year. The exclusives are:
Walmart- 3.75” Black Series Repacks of Prototype Boba Fett, Tusken Raider, Ponda Baba, and Sandtrooper (Orange Pauldron).
Target- 6” Black Series AT-ACT Driver
Entertainment Earth- 6” The Vintage Collection (Black Series) R5-D4
Images of all of these exclusives were shown to everyone who attended Hasbro’s press event, but photography during the presentation was prohibited, thus, there are no photos of these exclusives available. I’m guessing they will be released online and showcased at Star Wars Celebration.
Hasbro also announced a new 3.75” 5 POA two-pack of Han Solo (Bespin) and Boba Fett, set to release on Force Friday on September 1st. Other items availble on September 1st will be Hasbro’s The Last Jedi toy line. No photos or products were shown from Episode VIII except for a new First Order Stormtrooper Rifle Nerf gun, sporting the new Episode VIII packaging that was revealed last week.
