Ray Park really wants to return to the role of Darth Maul. FlicksandtheCity.com recently spoke to Ray Park at a festival and he said this:
“I’ve said that I would play anything to do with ‘Star Wars. But really, deep down, I would love to come back as Darth Maul — that’s what I want to do. I would go crazy, go mental, lock myself in a cabin, you know. Do the whole ‘method’ for two or three months, spear-fishing and stuff, just to play the character again.”
Is there really anyone that would object to seeing Darth Maul return to the big screen? I am big fan of J.W. Rinzler’s collection of stories by the Revenge of the Sith concept team, Star Wars: Visionaries. In it, Darth Maul, hellbent on revenge against Kenobi, figures out why Kenobi has take up roots on Tatooine. Darth Maul attempts to kidnap Luke Skywalker while Kenobi and the Lars family fight off Darth Maul, finally killing the cyborg devil once and for all. As a premise, the piece really works. It is fun and enthralling. It is also worth mentioning that George Lucas and Dave Filoni honored that concept in the fantastic Darth Maul story arcs for The Clone Wars. Many fans have lamented the resurrection of Darth Maul because they believe he died on the screen. For the rest of the fans that loved his resurrection (like me), I was saddened when The Clone Wars production “winded down” and we were left hanging. If Lucasfilm made this into a film, we would all be pleased. Luke Skywalker is the MacGuffin. Darth Maul is back. Ewan McGregor has expressed numerous times he would like to return as a ghost or a guy out there in the desert. I hope someone out there is listening and we get this one day, maybe as our first “Halloween” Star Wars film?
