The trio of new leads for Star Wars: Episode VII has yet to be revealed, but an actor from the original franchise is returning to reprise his role.Peter Mayhew will play Chewbacca for Disney and Lucasfilm’s upcoming sequel, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.
Disney and Lucasfilm have not commented on the report but most has speculated that the recent news of Mayhew canceling his appearance at Comicpalooza Con “due to filming” meant that he would infact reprise his role.
We regret to announce that Peter Mayhew is canceling his appearance at Comicpalooza this year due to filming.— Comicpalooza Con (@Comicpalooza) March 28, 2014
Back when news broke that Mayhew was going to have knee replacement surgery he was quoted saying “I intend to pursue the role of Chewbacca for Episode VII,”. Prior to the announcement of his cancellation it was well known that his progress of healing from the surgery was going very well, and just proved that Mayhew is determined to return. As always nothing is official until Disney/Lucasfilm announce anything concrete.
