Wow. I always thought J.J. Abrams would direct the whole trilogy based on the fact he directed two Star Trek films, a franchise he never really loved.
Lucasfilm is making a deal with Looper writer-director Rian Johnson to write and direct Star Wars Episodes VIII and IX.
The funniest part about all this was me and Jeremy Conrad from FuriousFanboys.com watched as Johnson argued with an internet journalist about covering Star Wars when he wasn’t that into it. The journalist replied that it kept the lights on. Afterward, Conrad tells me “that dude is directed a spin-off or an Episode…” and I noted it. I almost put it on the site in fact, but I figured it was a great guess but it wasn’t news yet. Now it is news.
Essentially, that means that the intention is for Johnson to take the baton from JJ Abrams, who has gotten the space franchise off the ground and is right now helming Episode VII.
Well, I will be sad to not see Abrams do the trilogy, but I will be excited to see the trend of new and exciting filmmakers making Star Wars films. If this info is correct and the deal pans out, we might get some official info shortly.
