The Los Angeles Times spoke to Rian Johnson’s spokesperson who confirmed Johnson is in fact directing Star Wars: Episode VIII and writing the film. Apparently, according to his brother, Ram Bergman is set to produce as well. That makes sense since Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman have worked on all of Johnson’s films together. It would not surprise me to find out J.J. Abrams was executive producing along with Kathleen Kennedy (although I think that is dependent upon her signing on for another deal).
Looper” writer-director Rian Johnson will write and direct “Star Wars: Episode VIII” and pen a treatment for Episode IX, a spokesperson for Johnson confirmed to The Times.
There is very little doubt that Johnson is directing the film at this juncture, but still:
A spokesperson for Disney declined to comment on Johnson’s hiring.

We still do not have the official word via StarWars.com, so consider everything 99.9% confirmed at this point. More than likely they are just wrapping up the details to announce the core team around Star Wars: Episode VIII.
