Rian Johnson is excited. But he can’t tell you why. But we all know why. He’s directing Star Wars: Episode VIII, writing IX, and probably directing that too, maybe. He talks a lot about what he can’t talk about with the Sun Times.
I’m really excited about all the things I can’t tell you.
I can imagine. He’s pretty much saying he’s doing the film and talking about.
Here’s the meat of it:
Johnson Skyped into the Filmspotting taping from San Fransisco, where he is already working on “Episode VIII.” The director of indie faves such as “Looper” says he took the job because “The thought of it made me so completely joyfully happy.
“I wanted to to play in this world, of literally the first movie my dad put me in the car to see,” he said.
As for how he scored the gig, Johnson laughed, “I can only assume it was a clerical error, like in the movie ‘Brazil.’ There’s a Brian Johnson out there who is really mad.”
He also compares working for Lucasfilm to:
“kind of like summer camp.”
Then he wins me over with:
There was something really beautiful about the prequels
Yes. Yes there is Mr. Johnson. Now can we just get your announcement out already?
I got in touch with Rian Johnson very briefly and he assured me he was not being sarcastic about the beauty of the prequels. For those of us bummed about the coverage painting it that way, do not fret, that was not his intention at all.
