Goodnight Darth Vader by Jeffrey Brown is a special book. I can tell you this because I’ve tried to write this review a few times already. It isn’t so much that its a hard book to discuss, it isn’t. The book is great fun and that’s the problem. Every time I take the book out to start this review, my son sees it and wants to look at the illustrations and he wants me to read it to him. We have had the book for over a week now and its my son’s “go to” book. Thankfully, I love it too.
Parents know what I’m taking about. Kids get a favorite book and they want you to read it to them over and over again. I can imagine how painful it must be if the book is something the child loves but the parent just does not. That’s the great thing about Goodnight Darth Vader by Jeffrey Brown. The book is clever, funny, heartfelt and most of all, this book is fun. The text and the illustrations are handled with a lot of love and it shows. There’s just as much for adults as children here.
But remember, this is my position on this book. It doesn’t mean you won’t find the book entertaining unless you’re reading it to a child. That’s not the case at all. The Star Wars galaxy all going to bed at the same time is funny and the illustrations will make you chuckle. One page has Sebulba bullying a Pit Droid on the next he’s sleeping and it reads “Sebulba races to always be best. Even when he gets his beauty rest.” Another favorite is a party at Jabba’s palace that reads “All through the night, Jabba’s place is aroar. The party’s too loud for the sleepy rancor.” The Rancor Keeper and the Rancor are not too pleased in the illustration.
I think Goodnight Darth Vader by Jeffrey is a great gift book for the Star Wars fan in your life. I think it will delight anyone with a healthy sense of humor. For parents like me, it means I get to read a book to my son that we both enjoy instead of it being a one sided affair. It probably also means I read to him even more, which is a great thing. I recommend picking this one up. I have the other books in the series too but I think this is my favorite by far.
Goodnight Darth Vader by Jeffrey Brown retails for $14.95 from Chronicle Books. Amazon has it listed for $9.99 and a Kindle edition for $8.69.
Thank you to Chronicle Books for my evaluation copy. My son Luke Danger thanks you as well!
