The Disney news blog Stitch Kingdom has reported that among the Star Wars names Lucasfilm has registered as trademarks (including some of the ones that were revealed last week: BB-8, Kylo Ren, and Poe Dameron) is one called “Captain Phasma.” That’s all the hard information they have currently, but in doing some research they found that Captain Phasma is not documented anywhere else except in “an extensive fan-fiction titled Tarkin’s Fist and random usernames.” So this name a relatively new and unforeseen development. Who is this “Captain Phasma?” Is that a code name meant to throw fans off the track, or is it legitimately the name of a character in The Force Awakens? And which actor or actress is most likely to play him or her, should that be the case? There has already been speculation that Gwendoline Christie, who is rumored to be playing Finn’s commanding officer, could be Phasma. Star Wars has a history of captains in and outside of the saga (Captain Panaka, Captain Typho, Captain Rex), so it’s no surprise to me that we could be seeing another one in the sequel trilogy. As to the name itself, Phasma sounds new and interesting, and could go either masculine or feminine, first name or last name. Hopefully we will find out more about this character when The Force Awakens hits theaters next December.
