Star Wars: The Force Awakens First Teaser Decoded Shot For Shot!

Here is our attempt at decoding the first teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens using the most solid information possible. I will try and identify the shots from the teaser and how they fit into the film. It will likely be pretty accurate, however, there is a chance these are just in the ballpark of the shots seen in the teaser we got last thanksgiving. As we begin to look forward to the next teaser, it might be fun to put this teaser behind us with it fairly figured out. If you’re a spoiler-phobe this article is clearly not for you.

71  EXT DAY NEAR SALVAGE STATION – DESTROYED TIE FIGHTER Finn wakes, finds TIE Fighter. Tries to get in.

Screen Shot 2015-03-13 at 9.09.38 AM

This sequence takes place after Poe Dameron and Finn crash on the sand planet’s surface. Shortly after this, Finn makes his way to the settlement where he becomes allies with Rey.

44  EXT DAY SALVAGE STATION – OUTSKIRTS BB-8 lands in frame – Rey and BB-8 head for Salvage Station.

Screen Shot 2015-03-13 at 9.25.34 AM

This sequence may be correct. The music for the teaser gives the impression this could be for the sequence where Stormtroopers chase Rey, BB-8, and Finn and they steal a famous ship to escape. However, this is the only description for the part of the film that notes any sort of close up of BB-8 itself.

3  INT NIGHT IMPERIAL TROOP LANDER Stormtroopers wait in cramped silence, Finn is out of sync.

Screen Shot 2015-03-13 at 9.26.02 AM

It seems we accurately assumed the guy a little short for a Stormtrooper was Finn.

11  INT/EXT NIGHT VILLAGE/IMPERIAL TROOP LANDER Finn and Stormtroopers leave the Troop Transport under fire.

Screen Shot 2015-03-13 at 11.42.54 AM

In this sequence, Finn’s friend is either severely wounded or killed. We think this is Pip Andersen’s role based on a few rumors we’ve heard. Concept art for this sequence depicts Finn’s friend having been shot, touching Finn’s helmet, leaving three bloody finger marks on the face of Finn’s helmet. Finn does not abandon the Empire in this sequence as we once thought. Instead, he returns to the Star Destroyer, is apparently berated by his superior and then escapes into a TIE Fighter with the now freed Poe Dameron.

33.1  EXT DAY STAR DESTROYER – GARBAGE CHUTE – DUNES Rey slides down dune, climbs onto her speeder.

Screen Shot 2015-03-13 at 9.27.25 AM

It appears to be the Star Destroyer wreckage Rey scavenges in her introduction. This is further evidence of a rather agile Rey in The Force Awakens.

35  EXT DAY SALVAGE STATION Rey arrives at the Salvage Station. Unloads her heavy stuff.

Screen Shot 2015-03-13 at 11.46.16 AM

This shot matches the teaser description the most. However, there’s no “heavy stuff” shown. There was concept art for the wagon speeder, but it appears as the drafts for the film changed, this speeder might not be featured as much if at all. We probably see the speeder in the film as it appears in the TMZ photos. Either way, it is not integral to understanding the film as it once was.

282  INT EVE POE X-WING FIGHTER COCKPIT Poe calls in enemy gunfire locations.

Screen Shot 2015-03-13 at 9.28.14 AM

This is pretty self explanatory. The X-wings are making their run on the evil castle which is integral to the Empire’s super weapon in the film.

284 PL EXT DAY EVIL CASTLE – SURROUNDINGS Plates required for X-Wings heading for the prize, some crash.

Screen Shot 2015-03-13 at 9.28.33 AM

337  EXT NIGHT EVIL CASTLE – COMMUNICATIONS OFFICE (SNOW) Kylo Ren moves purposefully towards the forest.

Screen Shot 2015-03-13 at 9.29.01 AM

This sequence occurs after Kylo commits a very grievous act. It is not long before Kylo’s big duel against  Finn and Rey. The “office” is either his ship or an actual small bunker type of base.

95  EXT DAY CRASHED STAR DESTROYER – DUNES (IMAX) Aerial plates: Millennium Falcon banks hard, upside down and swoops.

Screen Shot 2015-03-13 at 9.30.02 AM

This sequence was written about in depth already. The gist is that Rey and BB-8 fly the Falcon out of the salvage station area to escape the Imperials and end up flying into a giant crashed Star Destroyer.

Until we have a chance to read the script, novel, comic book adaptation, or someone sees the film and spills the beans, I think this is the best we can do for now. If any new solid information is revealed I will update this post with the most accurate information available to us.
