Star Wars Digital Release Listing on Vudu

On April 1st, our friends at Yakface ran a story about a sign at Walmart promoting the Digital Release of the Star Wars films via Vudu on April 10th, 2015. Because of the date, many weren’t sure whether it was an April Fools’ Day joke or not, though Yakface maintained that if it was a hoax, it wasn’t being perpetrated by them.

Now, the folks at Yakface have found further proof of the Digital Release:

The link takes one to Vudu’s listing of the Star Wars: Episodes 1-6 Bundle with bonus features. There are trailers for each film, which clearly show the Original Trilogy films to be some variation of the Special Editions (whether further changes have been made is not yet clear).

In addition to all six films, the special features include:

  • Deleted scenes for all six films
  • The Beginning Making of Episode I documentary
  • The Podrace, theatrical edit
  • Conversations: Doug Chiang Looks Back
  • Discoveries from Inside: Models and Miniatures
  • From Puppets to Pixels: Digital Characters in Episode II feature-length documentary
  • State of the Art: The Previsualization of Episode II
  • Films Are Not Release, They Escape documentary
  • Episode II Visual Effects Breakdown Montage
  • Conversations: Sound in Space
  • Discoveries from Inside: Costumes Revealed
  • Within a Minute: The Making of Episode III feature-length documentary
  • The Journey
  • ILM Episode III Siggraph Reel
  • Conversations: The Star Wars That Almost Was
  • Discoveries from Inside: Hologram and Bloopers
  • Anatomy of a Dewback
  • Star Wars Launch Trailer
  • Conversations: Creating a Universe
  • A Conversation with the Masters (2010)
  • George Lucas on Editing The Empire Strikes Back (1979)
  • George Lucas on the Force (2010)
  • Dennis Muran: How Walkers Walk
  • Conversations: The Lost Interview
  • Discoveries from Inside: Matte Paintings Revealed
  • Classic Creatures: Return of the Jedi
  • Trailers and TV Spots
  • Discoveries from Inside: The Sounds of Ben Burtt
  • Conversations: The Effects

I think it’s a safe bet to assume that the Digital Bundle will also be available via other platforms, but as nothing has officially been confirmed via Lucasfilm, we don’t know for sure. If the April 10th, 2015 date holds up, it’s a bit strange that Lucasfilm hasn’t made any sort of announcement this close to the release. We’ve known the films were to be released digitally for a while now thanks to action figure sets from Hasbro hitting the stores, and many have speculated that an announcement would be made at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim in a couple of weeks revealing a May 4th, 2015 date. These latest developments seem to contradict that, and it is anybody’s guess as to what is actually going on. We’ll post more on the Digital Release as it develops.
