Star Wars: The Force Awakens and the Chewbacca Remote!

Potential Spoilers

Read on at your own risk.

I heard an interesting piece of minor information tonight which might be of worth, might not be. I personally find it interesting, so I figure I’ll share it. I think it is a lot of fun, if not slightly esoteric. If you recall: Rey, Finn, Han Solo, and Chewbacca are forced to fight two rival gangs aboard a gigantic freighter. In the thick of the action, Chewbacca is wounded and sustains an injury to his arm. Our heroes win the fight and escape from the clutches of the rival gangs (codenamed “mods” and “rockers” in previous reports). They blast off into space aboard the Falcon.

As the Falcon frees itself from the freighter and escapes, Finn tends to Chewbacca’s wounds. While making small talk with the Wookiee, Finn finds a bag near his feet. He casually picks the bag up and opens it while chatting and fiddles with the remote Luke Skywalker trains with in A New Hope:

Remote

As Finn finishes talking, he seems disinterested in the remote, puts it back in the bag and places it back where he found it.

Since hearing this, I have pondered the meaning behind it if there is any at all. It might just be a “remember when!” Easter Egg. It might be a bit of foreshadowing that Finn isn’t destined to follow the way of the lightsaber. Or it might mean this stuff is coming to him because he was destined to find it all.

As I was getting wind of this sequence, I was hoping it might be offer more insight into the issue of Finn’s potential future as a Resistance fighter or Jedi Knight. Some people are saying that Finn is naturally attuned in the ways of the Force and others are saying it isn’t boldly stated in the film and left wide open for Star Wars: Episode VIII just like Leia’s future once was in the previous trilogy; they can take it or leave it.

Another cool moment is that at the end of the film, before Finn is in the medical bay after his fight with Kylo Ren, Chewbacca is attentive to Finn, showing a potential caring friendship between the two heroes. When Chewie is hurt, Finn helps him. When Finn is hurt, Chewie helps him. Space buds!

So there you have it, Obi-Wan Kenobi’s remote has a cameo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
