It’s long been rumored, and now the official Star Wars Web site has confirmed it: merchandise for Star Wars: The Force Awakens will launch on September 4th, 2015, or “Force Friday.”

StarWars.com is thrilled to announce that Star Wars: The Force Awakens products will land in our galaxy on September 4, 2015, at 12:01 a.m. — “Force Friday” — with stores around the world opening their doors at midnight for a special celebration of all things Star Wars. It will be a day long remembered.

“Every lightsaber, every action figure, every LEGO set tells a story for generations of Star Wars fans, and this global event is a celebration of those stories. We’re excited to be part of the countdown to this enormous movie moment,” said Josh Silverman, executive vice president, global licensing, Disney Consumer Products.

A lot of fans have been speculating about a midnight launch, akin to the Midnight Madness releases of prequel movie product. We knew that Toys ‘R Us would be doing a new Midnight Madness, but it’s nice to have other locations and a date confirmed. As an avid collector, I’m making my plans now for this event, and I’m sure quite a few other people are too.

Also, StarWars.com unveiled a look at the packaging for The Force Awakens‘ line:

Jason had mentioned that the line look would prominently feature Kylo Ren, and it does. Kind of reminds me of a cross between the Episode I and Episode III packaging designs. Looks pretty good!
