Shortly after Celebration Anaheim, Kathleen Kennedy and Daisy Ridley were doing press in Japan related to Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Now, thanks to a heads up by /Film, we have word that while there Kathleen Kennedy briefly touched upon Daisy Ridley’s character’s fighting style, in addition to who trained her.

Daisy trained with the swordfight choreographer of Game of Thrones… She learned the bojutsu fighting style. Rey uses the staff she has in the trailer to fight. Daisy’s gotten to be so good at bojutsu that even grown men on the set fear it.

I was pretty sure that I'd heard of a Game of Thrones fight choreographer being involved with The Force Awakens before, but apart from Gwendoline Christie and Miltos Yerolemou from that show being involved with the film, I seem to be having a hard time tracking down why I thought I'd heard that. But it's definitely news that Rey uses her staff and fights using bojutsu, which is a Japanese martial art focused on the staff. It'll be interesting to see Rey use it in combat and how it compares to the saga's reigning staff champion, Darth Maul. In an interview with the L.A. Times' Hero Complex, Darth Maul himself, Ray Park said of the staff that:

Bo staff is one of the hardest weapons to practice.

We'll get to see Rey employ bojutsu when Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theaters on December 18th, 2015.
