Today has been a huge day for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. There have been a lot of little confirmations all day of information we have tirelessly pored over for the last year or so. Personally, the biggest thing for me has been the announcement that Lupita Nyong’o’s character is in fact Maz Kanata (her code name was Rose).
The funniest part is that a friend of ours reached out to tell us that Nyong’o was playing “Maz or Kanata.” At the time I was a little frustrated and wanting to know which it was! My attempts to follow up with different sources were ignored or sources didn’t know for certain. So it got pushed aside and now we see it is actually her full name!
I’m not bringing this up to try and obtain some kind of retroactive credit for it. I bring it up because the interesting part is that the same source and another source mentioned that her place, referred to as the “Exotic City” in concept art and “The Hall of Mirrors” in official documents is actually called Golan. In a different version of the film, where the city was more vast, it was the “Golan District.” We don’t know if it really amounts to a city in the final version of the film, but there’s a chance it is called “Golan.”
So is Golan the name of Maz’s planet, city, castle, or pub? I don’t know. But the name was tossed out there with the correct name of Nyong’o’s character Maz Kanata and is worth seriously considering as a possibility. We aren’t insistent it is the name, but it seems very possible.
