San Diego Comic-Con is less than one month away and the exclusives are rolling out. For most Star Wars fans, the single most anticipated exclusive every year at SDCC is the Hasbro exclusive. If you read my interview with Hasbro at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim, you might have noticed that there seemed to be a bit of regret that Hasbro didn’t have an exclusive for Celebration. It’s really not too surprising however given that nearly every Star Wars licensee has probably been on “standby” mode waiting for the green light to release Star Wars: The Force Awakens merchandise. Well, let’s just say… “there’s been an awakening!”
Yesterday, Entertainment Weekly exclusively announced the first three collectibles based on the First Order Stormtrooper from The Force Awakens. The first two, from Hasbro and Mattel, will be SDCC exclusives. The third, from Lego, will be available January 1st, 2016.
Let’s start with the one we really care about: Hasbro’s 6″ Black Series First Order Stormtrooper. This item will cost $24.99 (Note: According to Hasbro’s PR today, the price may actually be $25.99), and limited qualities will be available at HasbroToyShop.com after the convention.
Jedi Insider leaked images for this figure earlier this week and everyone assumed this would be the SDCC exclusive. While the figure itself will be widely available as a general release in the 6″ line, the exclusive here is the packaging. That sounds silly in writing, but when you actually see the packaging, it’s hard to resist.
The hi-res image from Entertainment Weekly is impressive (most impressive), but Jedi Insider decided to one-up EW by posting a detailed video of the exclusive set:
Today, Hasbro released additional detail images of the packaging and the figure in action:
In addition to Hasbro’s figure, Lego will release a buildable First Order Stormtrooper, and Mattel will have add the character to its Hot Wheels line.
