Benicio del Toro offered major villain role for Star Wars: Episode VIII?

The Wrap had heard from multiple sources that Benicio del Toro may be the lead villain in Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII. A little known fact is that del Toro was offered the role of Darth Maul in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace but turned it down because of the lack of lines and screen time.

The Wrap writes:

Benicio del Toro has the offer to play the villain in “Star Wars: Episode VIII,” multiple individuals familiar with casting process have told TheWrap. Discussions are still in the very early stages, but Disney and Lucasfilm are high on the Oscar-winning “Traffic” star.

I think del Toro would be great in Star Wars film. It is unclear how he would fit into the current fold of villains introduced in The Force Awakens, but he would surely mix things up in a good way in 2017’s Episode VIII.
