Now, I’ll probably do an Indy 5 with Harrison, so then it’ll be five for Harrison, four for Tom.
Spielberg is of course referencing how many times he’s worked with Harrison Ford and Tom Hanks. I find this to be very exciting news. Chris Pratt was rumored to be taking over the Indiana Jones role in a what was described as a reboot. I personally never bought into the reboot model itself and saw it more as a further stories of Indiana Jones in different eras. Well, this new quote from Spielberg seems to squash that a little.
What if Pratt is simply going to play Indy in the opening sequence like River Phoenix did in Last Crusade? Then he could go on to play Indy in World War II as a spy or whatever idea they’ve cooked up and the transition would be a little more seamless. They were really smart with Star Wars to not just toss in a new cast but use the old cast to integrate the new characters in a way that makes it easier for the audience to handle. I could see digging that with Indy, personally.
Either way, we know it seems that the plan is for Spielberg to do Indy 5 with Harrison and that is fantastic news. I just hope George Lucas is collaborating with the trio and it is based on his story again. I love the previous four Indiana Jones films immensely and anything else they do is just a bonus as far as I’m concerned.
The rumor last year was that Harrison Ford took his Star Wars deal because it guaranteed him another Indy film. Ford’s deal for Indy has always been to do five films. The guarantee from Star Wars was lucrative because the payout Ford gets for Indy films is huge. Ford seemed to really love doing the last Indy film and the last Star Wars so good for him, I say!
