MTV News has a neat piece on Rey’s bread from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. I don’t know about you, but that moment is one of my favorite parts of the first part of the film. When Rey puts the powder in the bowl and starts mixing it around, it does kind of drive me crazy that some powder spills outside the bowl. How much bread was that? Unkar might have ripped you off, Rey, but you ripped yourself off by not being more careful! Okay, all that aside, I dig that bit A LOT. MTV reports:
“You wouldn’t believe how long it took to actually perfect that one, that little tiny gag in the film,” Corbould said. “It started off with the mechanics of getting the bread to rise and the liquid to disappear, but then there was the ongoing problem of what color should the bread be? What consistency should it be? Should it have cracks in it? Should it not have cracks in it?”
“It took about three months,” he added. “The actual mechanics of it was fairly simple, but the actual cosmetic side took a lot longer.”
It is weird to me that I think it was worth it. Three months to make bread rise and look right is nuts. But the moment is perfect and insightful to the world Rey is living in. In such a fast-paced film, these little quiet moments actually stand out and play well.
