Rian Johnson clarifies the meaning of Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Good Morning America shared a clip of an interview with the director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Rian Johnson.  In the clip, Johnson is asked whether or not “Jedi” in the title is singular or plural.  Johnson has no hesitation when he answers that “Jedi” in the title is in fact singular.  However, when asked to confirm that Luke is then the last Jedi, Johnson at first evades the question before ultimately (and somewhat shyly) admitting that it is Luke.

If the “Last Jedi” refers to Luke in Rian Johnson’s mind–and it is what he’s referred to in Star Wars: The Force Awakens–I think we can finally put to rest any questions on the meaning of the title, and move on to speculating about the implications of that reality.
