Sequel TrilogyThe Last Jedi

Adam Driver let a big piece of Rey’s backstory drop from Star Wars: The Last Jedi? Maybe. Maybe not.

Adam Driver spoke to GQ and apparently dropped a piece of Rey’s background during the interview. It changes the way we see and synthesize information on Rey’s lineage and history for sure. However, I think it is important to put it out there that Driver may be speaking in terms of metaphors and fairytales. I think this quote is going to blow up for sure so check it out:

“I remember the initial conversations about having things ‘skinned’,” Driver recalls, “peeling away layers to evolve into other people, and the person Kylo’s pretending to be on the outside is not who he is. He’s a vulnerable kid who doesn’t know where to put his energy, but when he puts his mask on, suddenly, he’s playing a role. JJ had that idea initially and I think Rian took it to the next level.”

“You have, also, the hidden identity of this princess who’s hiding who she really is so she can survive and Kylo Ren and her hiding behind these artifices,” Driver says, apparently dropping a massive revelation about Rey’s royal origins.

A part of me knows Rey is special. That’s a given. But is she literally a princess placed on Jakku by someone to save her? That’s totally possible too. I enjoy Driver’s quote for the Kylo/Ben stuff too because we know in Star Wars: The Last Jedi he no longer wears the mask for most of his scenes. It means Kylo is either becoming the monster he pretended to be with the mask or he’s shedding the skin that was never really him and confronting what he’s done.

Like I said, I think Driver is likely speaking metaphorically but GQ sees it as a spoiler. Discuss amongst yourselves.
