UPDATE: Game of Thrones showrunners to write and produce a new set of Star Wars films!

Lucasfilm has just announced that Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will be helming a new series of Star Wars films. The press release states that these films have no association with the Skywalker Saga or Rian Johnson’s upcoming trilogy.

“It was announced today that Benioff and Weiss, creators of the smash-hit, Emmy Award-winning television series Game of Thrones, will write and produce a new series of Star Wars films.

These new films will be separate from both the episodic Skywalker saga and the recently-announced trilogy being developed by Rian Johnson, writer-director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”

In the press release the standalone films where not mentioned, so my biggest question remains to be if they could be expanding on a standalone story and make it into a couple of films. There was speculation on a potential Solo and/or Kenobi trilogies, but both those rumors seem to be put to rest. I wonder if Lucasfilm will try to build cohesive storylines all at the same time, similar to what Marvel is doing, to eventually build up into a team-up film of sorts (Similar to The Avengers). In all honesty I hope that’s not the case and that these will all be different stories. Game of Thrones is a fantastic show so this news really excites me.

With now four separate Star Wars film projects and an animated and live-action show on the horizon, this truly is the greatest time to be a Star Wars fan!

During a earnings call with Bob Iger, Iger revealed that David Benioff and D.B. Weiss turned down the showrunner position for the upcoming live-action Star Wars TV series in favor of the films they’ll be working on. They asked to work in a particular time period in the Star Wars universe.

“Their interest was in creating a series of films that are Star Wars based, we’ve been talking to them for a long time,” Iger said. “They’re focused on a point in time in Star Wars mythology and we’re taking it from there.”

I’m very interested in what that point in time could be. Iger also stated that they are getting close to announcing the showrunners for the upcoming live-action series.
