Solo: A Star Wars Story – “Big Game” Trailer Reactions

Around the Galaxy: Star Wars News & Notes - Feb. 5, 2018, AM Edition

Potential spoilers for Solo: A Star Wars Story ahead…

Thoughts on the Teaser

My man Corey took care of the hard work last night and posted as much as possible in the wake of the big tease during the big game.

So, this morning, in the wake of the 45-second teaser trailer for Solo: A Star Wars Story, we’ll concentrate on getting you some reaction and news from around the galaxy.

First up, a reminder where we started:

Then, in case you’ve been under a rock, here’s the trailer:

Then I made a joke:

I kid, I kid. But enough of the preamble, what did folks think/see on the spot?

Breaking down the video

Let’s start with some usual subjects. First up, Alex from “Star Wars Explained”, who found a whole lot to enjoy in our first look at “young Han Solo.”

His final word: “This is a great teaser, and my hype is growing, but that’s pretty easy to do…”

Very, very fair.

Back to Breznican

Over at EW.com, senior writer Anthony Breznican has a pretty comprehensive shot-by-shot breakdown of the mini-trailer.

Anthony’s take:

Grace Randolph’s “Beyond The Trailer” was one of the first trailer reactions up last night…

To Randolph’s credit, she called out what she saw as the trailer’s flaws, saying, “It looks pretty good… until Alden Ehrenreich showed up.”

Grace seemed pretty enthused about the trailer until the waning moments, and added, “I think the best we can hope for is that this is a pretty darn good movie, with unfortunate casting… otherwise I was very impressed.”

Landa takes a look

The most unique take I saw was from our friend Jennifer Landa.

Like many of us, Super Bowl Sunday is a family day, so she watched the trailer with her parents. Afterward, she broke down the details.

Jennifer had a different take on the final shot of the trailer:

[Ehrenreich] looked like Harrison Ford. That got me thrilled.

Landa’s compatriots on ForceCenter (Ken Napzok, Joseph Scrimshaw) did a pretty nice–and lengthy–podcast breakdown as well.

I can’t wait to hear all the podcasts–especially everyone on the Making Star Wars Podcasting Network–later this week!

Last thoughts…

My own reaction to the trailer was mirrored by the many who enjoyed the clip but were waiting for today’s full trailer to give a complete response, but good friend Connie Shih paraphrased my own initial feelings:

I’m planning to do a second “Around the Galaxy” this afternoon, and I am sure some of my compatriots will be busy, while I am vocationally occupied. May the Force be with us… JB
