Ava DuVerernay (A Wrinkle In Time) announced today on Twitter that director Victoria Mahoney has been added as second unit director on Star Wars: Episode IX. Victoria has worked on projects such as Grey’s Anatomy and American Crime.
Happy to share this historic news. A black woman directing stories in a galaxy far, far away. First unit director #JJAbrams. Second unit director @VictoriaMahoney. #StarWarsE9 #StarWars pic.twitter.com/s689jv9I4u

Second unit directors are responsible for a few shots, so this is very cool. This is pretty historic news as this is the first female Star Wars director. She’s not the lead director but this is a very important role to have. Lucasfilm is definitely taking a step in the right direction with this announcement. Hopefully Lucasfilm announces a lead woman director for a future Star Wars project soon!
