Last week was rough. A 2017 petition was noticed that called for Meryl Streep to replace Carrie Fisher in the next episode of the Skywalker Saga. I left the internet for a few hours and I came back to see this older petition being reported on as a rumor in numerous places with all kinds of direct messages asking me to confirm it. As the snowball coverage took off it was almost immediately clear that something that was a deep fan desire by some became a rumor elevated to the status of a legitimate casting rumor thanks to poor coverage on the topic.
I didn’t cover the story because I didn’t want to perpetuate the rumor by even addressing it. Someone would read the headline, not the story, and now I’m part of sending the wrong message. The excellent Star Wars Explained saw Bobby Roberts of Full of Sith and myself talking about it on Twitter when I was checking to see if I had my angles correct on it. The video does a pretty excellent breakdown of the topic.
Check out the video:
A part of me never wants Leia during the sequel trilogy era to be recast. I would prefer a time jump to explain Leia leaving the trilogy. That said, it is a great idea to have Meryl Streep come in to replace her if anyone had to do it. Seriously, I can’t think of anyone I would prefer more if they continued Leia’s story on screen. I’m with Star Wars Explained in that I have no problem with the petition or those fan’s desires. That said, wanting things to happen does’t make something a new story or a real rumor and it should never have been reported as such.
