Brian Cameron at FanthaTracks.com is reporting that there’s movement on the Obi-Wan Kenobi Star Wars Story. The movie was never officially announced as being in production even though there were a lot of rumors it was happening still. We’ve had a television series announced, an animated series announced, a Rian Johnson trilogy, and an ongoing film series from the Game of Thrones showrunners but no Kenobi or Boba Fett film announcements. Today, Brian Cameron is reporting the his well placed source has confirmed to him the Kenobi film is moving forward at Pinewood.
Cameron shared this from his source:
The project is sufficiently along that an art department is now in full pre-production mode at Pinewood Studios, England with ancillary work being carried out at Industrial Light & Magic in London. A number of concept artists, prop modellers, and storyboard artists are working as a team across the two locations on the film, with the group growing in numbers every month.
Contracts have also been extended to a number of crew who have worked on various Star Wars films produced at Pinewood under the Disney era, to join the production when their work on Episode IX ends. This will see the Obi-Wan crew grow gradually over the remainder of the year but primarily from October on wards.
Pre-production will continue at Pinewood whilst Episode IX shoots from this summer through the end of the year, at which point production of the Obi-Wan movie has been scheduled to move onto stages in mid January 2019 with the main shoot to begin in April of 2019.
If Brian Cameron trusts the source, there’s a pretty good reason to believe this is highly likely and it seems like a Kenobi movie is about to really start moving forward. This isn’t like a Reddit rumor or anything, Brian and I have rarely not seen eye to eye on how things are transpiring between our sources and he’s good at this.
I wonder if the movie is being kept secret until Solo: A Star Wars Story has been released and they’ve seen that pre-sales have been solid on that movie so its a good idea to announce it. However, I would imagine this has been going down for a while now based on the rumored writers and directors so I bet it was going to happen regardless of how Solo performed.
The important thing for me is that Ewan McGregor comes back. As rad as Alec Guinness is, Ewan defined Kenobi for me because he had three movies to make it happen and I would love to see him return. But if it did move to another actor, that’s just the way it goes. But it would be a shame because Ewan was stellar as Kenobi and has expressed a desire to play the part again more than seven hundred thousand times.
