- Variety is reporting that Keri Russell is joining the cast of Star Wars: Episode IX. Russell has worked with Abrams before and was the star of Felicity, one of Abrams’ earliest works before going on to star in the excellent series The Americans, which just wrapped. Variety adds that Russell worked with Abrams on Mission: Impossible III as well.
Variety‘s details on the role are sparse but they say:
The role calls for action-heavy fight scenes. Russell has shown her ability to perform tough stunts in projects like FX’s “The Americans,” “Mission: Impossible,” and “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.”
Abrams and Lucasfilm execs met with several actresses for the role in the past two months and settled on Russell right before the Fourth of July holiday.
I’m pretty excited to see what J.J. Abrams does with this film. I feel like Abrams delivered exactly what Star Wars needed in 2015, but Star Wars has different needs today. Rian Johnson took the story down a rabbit hole no one expected and how Abrams pulls the heroes out of the other side of that is going to be interesting.
I’m super curious as to Keri Russell is playing. Is she another Resistance leader like Vice Admiral Holdo and General Leia? I’m sure there will be people hoping she’s Mara Jade. That’s the fun part of a new Star Wars film going into production as there’s so much to dream about and so much potential with some many mysteries to unfold over the course of the production.
December of 2019 cannot get here fast enough. I’m ready!
