Matt Smith and the Paddock
As I’ve been going through old notes of work and conversations I conducted throughout the last year, I’ve been able to verify that a lot of the information was pretty on based on the teaser trailer and other leaks related to posters and merchandising. With that in mind, Matt Smith is definitely in the movie.
His character is connected to the 4 acre Pinewood Studios Paddock lot according to sources. However, I believe that moment from the trailer where they observe the Death Star was filmed there for the crashing waves and such. That’s where I believe they filmed the Death Star “graveyard” moments from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. So if I’m reading between the lines correctly, Smith didn’t film at the paddock but is connected to because its where they see the Death Star in the film. That location was where we believe they shot the Death Star coast.
My sources insist that Smith is not a Knight of Ren or their leader. That always made sense to me because their name is pretty clear that Kylo Ren is their leader. It also doesn’t sound like one tries to change them to The Knights of Matt Smith is the point, I guess.
Matt Smith Confirmed for The Rise of Skywalker
I was actually asking if Matt Smith was actually in this movie recently hoping to draw out more information on it so it could confirm this piece. However, international Disney websites are confirming Matt Smith is working on the film in what I assume to be a blunder of sorts.
Disney.pl also shared the same information.
This is important as it gives this rumor a lot of credibility on its own having heard it before it was confirmed by the company.
Spoiler Warning Again: If Accurate It Could Be The End of the Film!
A really solid source over the years passed on something they heard internally. But this means this past solid source is using information that is once again somewhat unproven. Otherwise, I’d double down on this being 100% but that said, I trust their judgement and that’s why I’m moving forward with this piece that very well may be wrong. However, I think we should see it as likely but be open to all the possibilities still.
- The rumor is that Matt Smith isn’t Palpatine reborn or rejuvenated but a dark side acolyte.
- However, during The Rise of Skywalker, Smith’s character is willfully possessed by the spirit of Emperor Palpatine.
- During the final act of the film Rey and Kylo team up to fight the Palpatine possessed Matt Smith.
- The two-on-one duel is pretty intense for the duo.
- Eventually Kylo Ren kills Palpatine’s host body
- Palpatine’s spirit then jumps into Kylo Ren’s body.
- Kylo Ren is strong enough to not lose total control of his mental faculties.
- Kylo Ren struggles to take control of his body but subdues himself and his weapon while beckoning Rey to kill him.
- Kylo does the right thing and becomes Ben Solo again as he sacrifices himself to kill Palpatine.
- Rey having never toyed with the dark side like Kylo Ren and the acolyte did means Palpatine has body evil enough to inhabit.
So once again, this is going around internally amongst people who may not have the full picture of the film. I think it is interesting. It seems possible. It has a very exorcist type of vibe to it. I do believe Rey does something pivotal that ends Kylo. But I haven’t been able to discern if that is actually him dying or ceasing to be Kylo Ren and becoming Ben Solo. Does it have to do with that intervention we heard about? Or is Ben back for entire fight but still susceptible to Palpatine because of his past actions and struggles?
I tried to get additional confirmation on this story but I pretty much ran into dead ends because its the hardest part of the movie to get to right now. So I’m personally treating the whole thing as a developing story and as more concrete details come out we will hopefully figure things so we can get used to the ideas and the feel of the movie we’re going to get this Christmas.
The Last Jedi was also rumored to have a marketing campaign around a new dark side villain that was to be revealed and teased in the film. From what we understand, it was scrapped for something else as time went on and it never happened. I always believed it was referenced here in this i09 article that mentioned something along those lines from an official Lucasfilm magazine called The Souvenir Guide to the Movie Star Wars: The Last Jedi:
Force sensitive, and highly attuned to the dark side but not a Sith, Snoke has trailed Kylo Ren and at least one other apprentice
Is that Matt Smith’s character?
Treat it as a rumor. Don’t spread it around social media. Be cool. Don’t be a dick.
