StarWars.com announced The High Republic this evening. We first heard of The High Republic sometime ago and then publishing started to confirm the hints over time. Project Luminous has been underway for sometime, as early as 2018. We heard the project would be mostly new materials but would have the opportunities for characters like Yoda to Chewbacca can appear as they are alive at this time. But the emphasis is on new characters and stories and I think if we see those characters off the bat it will not be as central characters. It does give the opportunity for Baby Chewbacca though. But to be clear this is more of a Star Wars “Arthurian legend” series of new original tales 200 years before The Skywalker Saga.
Star Wars: The High Republic, which has previously been referred to as “Project Luminous”, will be set in an era when the Galactic Republic and the Jedi Order are at their zenith, about 200 years before the events of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. This period on the Star Wars timeline will not overlap any of the filmed features or series currently planned for production, giving creators and partners a vast amount of room to tell Star Wars stories with new adventures and original characters.
The announcement video likens the Jedi of this era to the Knights of the Round Table. It essentially sounds like the prequel era without the decay of the Republic by the Sith. So we have Jedi patrolling the outskirts of Republic rule and that kicks off many adventures against the Nihil which as like space vikings according to Lucasfilm. The Nihil sounds a bit like George Lucas’ Legions of Lettow which eventually stole the power to become Sith in the early drafts of Lucas’ work.
Did you see the “splinter group force users” on the white board? Sounds like it good be the start of a Jedi Holy War style stuff we talked about on the last episode of Now, This is Podcasting!
Some print materials on the way:
I’m excited and not excited at the same time. There isn’t really anything here to get me super excited. As we get to read more about the era I might care more. I honestly think it would have been nicer to have some samplers or things to really get excited for at the moment. That said, it is a huge opportunity and it is really obvious that it can pay off big time. I’m always in Star Wars’ corner so I’m hoping for the best. The last era of publishing was better than what had come before in a lot of ways but it also let me down to such an extent I felt it barely mattered. It was disposable Star Wars for me. It entertained me and it was quickly forgotten (once again for me if you love it, I’m so glad). I hope this series has me hooked and it doesn’t lose focus or its way and I hope the films it can spawn do happen because I’d love to see something original yet familiar which is what this publishing event throws at fans this August.
