The next Star Wars films are now hitting Dec. 22, 2023, Dec. 19, 2025, and Dec. 17, 2027.

Movies every other year starting in 2023!

Disney has announced new release date windows for the next Star Wars films.  The next batch of films will hit every other year starting at the very end of 2023.  When you really get down to it, we won’t be watching a new Star Wars film on the big screen until 2024, in essence anyways. That’s a huge bummer that we will have to wait so long. Take solace in the fact that we even have release dates at this point.

Rumors coming out of Disney for the past few months haven’t always painted pretty pictures about the immediate future of Star Wars. There have been rumors of productions being budgeted differently and scaled-down in size to make them work in the economic future we’re facing.

Variety writes:

Meanwhile, a trio of “Star Wars” movies will debut around Christmas every other year starting in 2023. The first of three films will launch on Dec. 22, 2023, and two follow-ups will hit theaters Dec. 19, 2025, and Dec. 17, 2027. The studio has kept its cards close to its chest about what those films will entail.

I know a lot of you have wanted a Star Wars film every other year.  There’s always a silver lining, right?  I think that will ultimately be best for merchandise as well as development. The greedy part of me wants a new one every year still but I think they pushed it too far with Solo: A Star Wars Story which was a very good movie that “failed.”

The good news is Star Wars on Disney+ should continue strong and carry us through those off years.  Personally, I feel like The Mandalorian kind of buried the fervor of The Rise of Skywalker.  I hope there’s some kind of balance between Star Wars on television and Star Wars on screen. Films like Solo would have benefitted from being a series and not a film anyhow. In fact, the dudes over at Kessel Run Transmissions are reporting something that makes me happier than seeing a double rainbow. Double Lando.

In the big picture, this is all for the best.  The stagnated pictures release could mean good things for the quality of Star Wars.  Also, by only promising a picture every other year,  it isn’t like they can’t start releasing films in between those years if they should want to or something really needs to come out and they want it out as soon as possible.

Hopefully we get more details about the future of Star Wars soon. Check out the full Variety article for the rest of the information if you follow other Disney franchises like Avatar and so on.
