Rogue Squadron, Rangers of the New Republic, Ashoka Tano, and more announced by Disney!

Disney Investor Day!

Today is Disney Investor Day 2020. It’s the day where they convey how exciting the future is for the company and why you should invest your hard-cold-cash into their company. This one was a really big deal compared to the past in terms of presentation and access. Was it the announcements were so big? Was it Covid-19 ruining everything this last year? I would imagine it is a bit of both.

86.8 million subscribers for Disney+ is pretty insane and surely something to boast about for them. It’s important to remember that when considering how they release Star Wars content these days as that’s a lot of consumer access. I imagine the releases to Disney+ are cheaper and more profitable for them in general. But it isn’t like it was organic. I did probably see as much promotion for The Mandalorian as I did The Rise of Skywalker in terms of billboards and so on here in Southern California anyway.

Disney plans to release 10 original Star Wars TV series on Disney+ over the next few years. “The next few years,” says absolutely nothing. It is obvious that as we move through time these things will pile up. 10 sounds great though. Before this, we knew about half of that number, and remember there are “limited series” like Obi-Wan Kenobi. Cassian Andor was known, more Mando and The Bad Batch has been announced as well.

Rangers of the New Republic and Ashoka Tano are two new shows coming from Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau! I would imagine Rangers is going to be a space cop show. I think we saw this teased in recent Mando episodes.

  • Andor is the title of Star Wars’ Cassian show and will consist of 12 episodes.
  • Hayden Christensen will return to play Darth Vader in Star Wars: Kenobi.
  • Lando is getting his own “event series” by Justin Simien!
  • The Acolyte is a High Republic series! “The Acolyte” is a mystery-thriller that will take viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era.”
  • A Droid Story is a show featuring Artoo and Threepio in which “This epic journey will introduce us to a new hero guided by R2-D2 and C-3PO.”
  • Willow the series has Warwick Davis returning as Willow Ufgood and that’s badass news!
  • Pre-production of the final Indiana Jones film is underway. Nothing too new there. It releases in July 2022.
  • Children of Blood and Bone is still happening. It’s going to be good too.
  • Star Wars Visions is going to be an anime anthology series using Japanese directors.
  • Taika’s film is on track and Patty Jenkins is making a Rogue Squadron film!

That’s a lot! Process it. The future looks fun!
