Star Wars: Rogue Squadron adds production designer Aline Bonetto?

The website The Ronin has has learned that production designer Aline Bonetto has joined Star Wars: Rogue Squadron. Aline Bonetto also worked on the Wonder Woman films with Patty Jenkins, who will be directing Rogue Squadron.

It is noted that Jenkins told IGN the movie will not be based on any of the books or video games set in the Star Wars universe. This isn’t exactly surprising as the press release stated:

The story will introduce a new generation of starfighter pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing, high-speed thrill-ride, and move the saga into the future era of the galaxy.

“The future era of the galaxy” reads like it takes place after The Rise of Skywalker. With that in mind, these new films never seem to stray too far from the established mold of what Star Wars looks and feels like. But it also means Aline Bonetto is going to literally be establishing the style, the settings, and the general vibe with Patty Jenkins and the producers of a new era in the galaxy.

You want to take these press releases really seriously but they can always be read multiple ways as they say a lot without saying anything concrete at all. They’re like a flakey friend at times. That said, I’m going to take this one literally and assume it means the series takes place in a future era of the greater saga so far.

I wonder how much of this concept speaks or spoke to the Rangers of the New Republic show? If this idea takes place after the final defeat of Palpatine, it means the republic or the victorious resistance is fighting off lawlessness. Perhaps the film deals with a meta problem while the show’s concept set decades before, would have dealt with micro issues like Mandos not obeying intergalactic traffic laws?

If you’re like me and you like to use new Star Wars casting and behind the scenes talent to checkout films you may have never seen before, you can see Aline Bonetto‘s body of work listed here.

Rogue Squadron is set to release on December 22, 2023.
